The end of 2006 had quite a few new developments in store for the SAEON Ndlovu Node. First and foremost of these was the appointment of the new Node Manager, Anthony Swemmer, who turned out to be the winner of the second prize in last year’s SAEON Summit poster competition for students. Tony assumed duty on January 1 this year and presented his first public talk to the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Meeting on 23 January.

Another new initiative that is expected to make a positive contribution to the effective functioning of the Node, is the appointment of the first SAEON Special Advisor on Information Management, Judith Kruger. Judith will work closely with GIS/Data Manager Nikki Stevens to build the data management system of the Node parallel with the Kruger Park system.

1 November 2006 saw the official move of the SAEON Ndlovu staff into their new offices, which they describe as “great, very light and spacious”. They share the building, which has ample laboratory facilities, with Kruger Park scientists.

Building mutually conducive partnerships

Nikki attended a biodiversity workshop at the Palabora Mining Company where she established some very important and exciting links with the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region, Palabora Mining Company and the Biodiversity Unit of the University of Limpopo. She anticipates that productive networks and partnerships will come from this.

At the biodiversity workshop the need for SAEON to facilitate and unite long-term research in this area was recognised. The SAEON staff is currently engaging with all interested partners to meet and work together to produce a useful and productive way forward for SAEON in the region.
