SAEON Ndlovu Node’s partner in its best-practice education outreach programmes, Palabora Mining Company's Palabora Foundation, has just won two prestigious awards – in the Nedbank Capital Green Mining Competition and the Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Awards (Corporate Category).

Taking the lead in ‘green mining’, the Foundation won top honours in the socioeconomic category of the Nedbank Capital Competition. The Foundation was recognised for its “significant contribution in terms of social and economic upliftment of the communities surrounding the mine”.

The Foundation's work include educator development, school governance and management, a library project for community and schools, learner support programmes, skills development training, and a community HIV/Aids centre. They also undertake science and environmental education in partnership with the SAEON Ndlovu Node. This partnership has led to highly successful programmes - such as National Science Week and Women in Science - in the Ba-Phalaborwa region in Limpopo Province.

“While the concept of mines forming trusts to benefit communities that surround them is not unique, Palabora's win demonstrates a clear intent to continuously 'push the boundaries' to ensure the benefits are sustained way beyond the life of the mine,” Nedbank Capital said.

In a letter to Ray Duba, Programme Head: Whole School Development of the Palabora Foundation, SAEON’s Education Outreach Coordinator, Sibongile Mokoena says:

“Congratulations! 2006 is your year. Two prestigious awards in one year is an exceptional achievement. You are making news headlines all over the media.

The Foundation has made a big contribution to maths and science education in the surrounding communities, 'and so say all of us'. It is such a good feeling to get some form of recognition for the excellent work you are doing. SAEON is very proud to be associated with the Palabora Foundation.

Well done!”
