SAEON inspires learners to choose a career in environmental science

SAEON’s Hadley Lyners gives learners some insight into the best ways to approach future life decisions. The learners listen attentively to Hadley’s presentation on the different career options available in conservation and environmental science.

SAEON was invited to give a presentation at a career education workshop as part of this year’s Fynbos Forum, which was held in Bredasdorp and drew more than 300 representatives from various environmental and conservation agencies.

Initiated by Sharon Brink, Chairperson of the Southern Overberg branch of the Botanical Society, the workshop was presented by SAEON in conjunction with SANParks and Cape Nature. It was attended by Grade 10 and 11 learners of two local high schools – Albert Myburgh and Bredasdorp High.

The presentation given by Hadley Lyners, Education Outreach Officer of SAEON’s Fynbos Node, included 40 different career options in conservation and environmental science and 10 life messages on how learners can approach their decisions about life.

Hadley showed learners the CAPE Careers in Conservation DVD, with each school receiving a copy of the DVD as well as copies of Africa Geographic magazine. The presentation was well received by the learners of both schools.

The workshop was coordinated by Alliston Appels from SANParks. Edith Henn, Lesley-Ann Williams and Mortimar De Boer from Cape Nature joined Hadley in motivating the learners to consider a career in conservation and environmental science.

Learners were invited to approach the team after the workshop if they wanted more information on the different careers.
