Prof Hannes Rautenbach is interviewed live on Fokus. Keith Campbell of Engineering News interviews SAEON’s Wim Hugo (Picture: Mitzi du Plessis) The article in Global Imagination’s Winter 2011 Newsletter features a photograph of the SAEON Egagasini Node’s Education Outreach Officer, Thomas Mtontsi teaching learners about the oceans surrounding South Africa.

The SAEON Elwandle Node’s Renée Koper, a Dutch MSc student was interviewed by Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Meerbode regarding her research on the occurrence, group size and behaviour of humpback dolphins in Algoa Bay. The article entitled Aalsmeerse Renée Koper onderzoekt bultrugdolfijnen in Zuid-Afrika appeared on page 16 of the newspaper on 13 January 2011.

An interview with Wim Hugo, SAEON’s Systems Engineer appeared in Engineering News of 3 December 2010. Entitled South African specialists find ways around bandwidth problems, the article describes how South Africa’s low-bandwidth, high-cost internet environment has driven innovation by the country’s electronic spatial data distribution specialists, among others SAEON and the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas.

Prof Hannes Rautenbach of the University of Pretoria was interviewed on January 23 on the television programme Fokus (SABC2) on behalf of SAEON. The interview focused on the recent floods and addressed the issue of climate change. Prof Rautenbach and his team are currently collaborating with SAEON’s Ndlovu Node on a climate change project.

An article entitled “Magic Planet Helps South Africans Illustrate Ocean Sciences” appeared in Global Imagination’s Winter 2011 Newsletter. It outlines the SAEON Egagasini Node’s use of its Magic Planet in environmental education outreach activities.
