A pilot’s report by Dr Gavin Bingham entitled Jonkershoek Weather Station for SAEON appeared on the website of The Bateleurs. The report describes the mission to deliver weather station equipment, tools and technicians to the top of the Jonkershoek Panorama Trail.

An article entitled Building On A Legacy Of Coastal And Marine Science In South Africa appeared in the June 2013 edition of the Financial Mail Essentials Green Business newsletter. The article looks at the role of SAEON and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) as research platforms that “contribute towards protection and preservation of coastal and marine environments in support of sustainable economic and social growth in South Africa”.

An article entitled SAIAB and SAEON At Eastern Cape Ports And Maritime Conference 2013 appeared in NRF Communique, the internal newsletter of the National Research Foundation.

An article entitled The Tsitisikamma MPA monitoring still in need of fine-tuning that appeared in the June 2013 edition of SANParks Times, mentions that SAEON is currently testing which methods are most suitable for monitoring nearshore reef-fish populations in the area. Results of SAEON’s controlled fishing experiments are being used by SANParks to assess the status of the fish stocks in the area.

An article entitled Kids in Parks going strong after three years that appeared in the June 2013 edition of SANParks Times, mentions SAEON’s assistance in the Kids-in-Parks project. SAEON staff members took the learners out in the field to be scientists for an hour or two. “The youngsters learned the ropes of vegetation monitoring, which went down well with all groups that attended.”

A profile on SAEON entitled Your eye on our changing earth appeared on pages 26 and 27 of the May 2013 edition of the IndustrySA Magazine (Issue 9).

An article entitled The SA Risk and Vulnerability Atlas GeoSpatial Database, written by Wim Hugo, SAEON’s Chief Data and Information Officer, appeared in the June 2013 edition of SARVA eNews, the electronic newsletter of the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas project.

An article entitled Coasts and oceans - biodiversity risk and vulnerability, written by Anthony Bernard of SAEON’s Elwandle Node, appeared in the June 2013 edition of SARVA eNews, the electronic newsletter of the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas project.
