SAEON received several mentions in the latest SANParks Research Report, which also includes an in-depth article, Fine-tuning the monitoring of marine fish in Marine Protected Areas, on the Stereo-BRUV work carried out by SAEON’s Elwandle Node in the Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area (page 37).

  • The Marine Stewardship Council issued a news release entitled Sustainable hake fishery brings long term economic and environmental benefits to South Africa. It highlights the Benthic Trawl Experiment, a pioneering research project being conducted in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 nautical miles off the west coast of South Africa, where the trawl industry have agreed to stop fishing in certain areas for a period of at least four years to monitor ecosystem recovery in areas of closure.
  • Dr Juliet Hermes, Manager of the SAEON Egagasini Node, and Mike Roberts of the Department of Environmental Affairs are the two South Africans who are part of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR). Read SCOR’s fascinating article: New Indian Ocean Program Builds on a Scientific Legacy in Eos, Vol. 95, No. 39, 30 September 2014.
  • SAEON was mentioned (pages 53, 62, 96-97) in the 2013/14 Annual Report of the Department of Science and Technology.
  • SAEON also featured on the Facebook page of the Midlands Meander Education Project. Sue J van Rensburg, Manager of SAEON’s Grassland Forest Wetland Node and intern Nasiphi Peter visited Kings School and Shea O'Connor Combined School in Nottingham Road to introduce and install Calendar Gardens, amid great excitement and enthusiasm shown by the learners and educators.
