SAEON was invited to set up a display stand at this year’s celebration of World Environment Day in Kimberley. Dr Joh Henschel, Manager of the Arid Lands Node and staff members Omphile Khutsoane and Zanele Chonga attended the programme on 6 June. The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Hon. Edna Molewa, led the celebrations.

The minister showed interest in the SAEON stand and was impressed by the node’s science education outreach programme. Dr Henschel presented her with a copy of "The SAEON Story". In her keynote address later in the day she mentioned details from this publication, such as SAEON’s work in oceanography. She stressed that she would like to see some of the Kimberley learners among the ranks of South Africa’s future marine scientists, and that learners should consider following SAEON’s (DST) programme.

The picture shows the minister (right) and her entourage attentive to what Omphile (not visible in the picture) is saying, while Zanele (left) and Dr Henschel (centre) look on.
