SEAmester ne Agulhas System Climate Array

Umfanekiso obonisa apho zifakwe khona ezi zixhobo

Ukuzibona engumfundi kolu hambo utitshalakazi kubangele ukuba ihlaziyeke ngokutsha indlela ababona ngayo abafundi. Kuwo onke amalungiselelo akhe ngoku uyakutsho awenze ngendlela eyodwa.

Ukuncedisa iprojekthi yakhe uZukanye Tida, wenze udliwano nedlebe naba kwa South African Weather Service (Lebohang Melato kunye no Lebogang Mashile), ne nenekazi eliyikhadethi yomkhumbe.

Zukanye Tida wenze le ngxelo ngohambo: "Ndityhileke kakhulu ngenxa yoluhambo, zinizi izinto ezintsha endizifundileyo futhi noba bendiye ndagula nje ngenxa yokungaqheli umkhumbi kodwa ndazingcono ngezifundo ezingolwandle ngoku.”

Amazwi okugqibela akhe: "Ndiyababublela futhi ndinentlonipho eyodwa kubantu abaye bobelana ngolwazi lwabo nam."

Clarence Daniels ukhawuleza waqonda ukuba unomdla kweli cala lokwakheka kolwandle (chemistry) yolwandle. BOX: SEAmester, South Africa’s Classroom Afloat: An opportunity for school sciences?

The SEAmester initiative aimed to introduce marine science as an applied and cross-disciplinary field to students who have shown an affinity for core science disciplines. It combined traditional classroom lectures with hands-on ship-based deck activities for 40 students, while providing them an opportunity to support specialist scientists in marine research activities.

As part of the SAEON Egagasini Node’s Education Outreach Programme, which is aimed at equipping learners with science skills, Clarence Daniels (Grade 10) from Houtbay High School and Zukhanye Tida (Grade 11) from Sophumelela High School were given an opportunity to participate in the first SEAmester cruise. They attended the lectures, interacted with the different experts and students, completed a small science project and participated in the Adopt-a-float deployment process as representatives of their schools.

Four of the five schools supported by the Node’s Education Programme will be monitoring the trajectories and analysing the data from these Argo floats. The data is made publically available on the Argo website within hours of collection.

Argo is a global array of some 3 900 free-drifting profiling floats that measure the temperature, salinity and velocity of the upper 2 000 metres of the ocean.
