1801.jpg A research article co-authored by Dr Joh Henschel, Manager of SAEON’s Arid Lands Node (pictured) was published in PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, open access scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science (PLOS). The article details research into the specific microbial communities associated with the rhizosphere of Welwitschia mirabilis, a living fossil. Dr Henschel was involved in the fieldwork component of the project.
1802.jpg A paper by SAEON’s Chief Research Scientist, Prof. William Bond, was published in the journal Science in January 2016. Titled “Ancient grasslands at risk”, it illustrates how highly biodiverse tropical grasslands are at risk from forest-planting efforts.
1803.jpg A peer-reviewed article co-authored by SAEON’s Dr Albrecht Götz (pictured) was published in Fisheries Research, an international journal on fisheries science, fishing technology and fisheries management:
PARKER D, WINKER H, BERNARD ATF, HEYNS-VEALE ER, LANGLOIS TJ, HARVEY ES, GÖTZ A (2016) Insights from baited video sampling of temperate reef fishes: how biased are angling surveys? Fisheries Research 179: 191-201.
1804.jpg An article on a 40-year, long-term data set from Namaqualand, co-authored by Dr Helga van der Merwe, Research Career Award Fellow at SAEON’s Arid Lands Node (pictured), was considered for the Applied Vegetation Science Editors Awards and is mentioned in this Editorial – see highlighted section.

Says Helga: “I’m glad the world outside is starting to see how important long-term monitoring is!”
